Portable Modular Shelter for Refugee Families
Project type
Engineering Design Project
Date
Spring 2025
Location
Durham NC
Collaborated with Clean Shelter, an international humanitarian organization, to design a durable, modular shelter system intended for long-term use in resource-constrained environments. Adapted commercially available canopy tents into a scalable, linkable structure through the design of custom mechanical connectors, modular wall panels, and a robust anchoring strategy.
Led mechanical design efforts including wind load analysis, uplift resistance calculations, and anchoring force sizing to ensure structural stability under sustained environmental loads. Prototyped and evaluated multiple connection mechanisms, selecting solutions based on durability, ease of assembly, and manufacturability. Developed CAD models and physical prototypes to validate modular expansion, privacy, and rapid deployment.
The final design balanced cost, robustness, and ease of deployment, delivering a practical, field-ready shelter solution compatible with existing supply chains. The proposal was positively received by Clean Shelter as a scalable improvement to existing temporary housing solutions.
