Elephant Feeder for NC Zoo
Project type
Engineering Design Project
Date
Fall 2023
Location
Durham, NC
For this project, we worked with the North Carolina Zoo to develop a feeder that promotes enrichment for elephants by simulating natural foraging behavior. Key design requirements included animal safety, resistance to damage from trunk manipulation, and ease of use for keepers. The feeder was constructed by modifying a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) barrel. Openings were cut into the barrel wall, and PVC pipes were inserted and secured to serve as compartments for storing straw. The dimensions of the openings and pipe placement were selected to restrict immediate access to the feed, requiring the elephants to use their trunks to extract the straw gradually. This design increases feeding time, provides behavioral stimulation, and withstands repeated mechanical stress from the elephants’ interactions.
